Who is Emila Ray?
When I was a little more than seven years old, my mother took me to our school bulletin board and told me I could pick one after-school activity. I looked at the array of choices on different colored papers, overwhelmed with excitement, and without reason or hesitation, I chose: Acting.
Being an actor remains as gleeful and exhilarating as it did way back on those Tuesday afternoons singing from “The Wizard of Oz” and doing scenes from “The Peanuts” cartoons. It is such a truthful and grounded part of who I am. I constantly find new joys and fears as I explore different roles.
I naturally find myself gravitating towards complicated and dynamic female characters. I love revealing their humanity and playing women who are much more than they appear. Some of my favorite roles include Una in David Harrower’s “Blackbird,” Honey in “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf,” and Elaine in “Arsenic and Old Lace.”
I continue to take classes so that I am always in practice and community. Acting continues to be my first love, and I have no doubt that it will be a part of every stage of my creative life.
